چکیده

Learning plays a vital role in the development of situated agents. In this paper, we explore the use of reinforcement learning to "shape" a robot to perform a predefined target behavior. We connect both simulated and real robots to ALECSYS, a parallel implementation of a learning classifier system with an extended genetic algorithm. After classifying different kinds of Animatlike behaviors, we explore the effects on learning of different types of agent's architecture (monolithic, flat and hierarchical) and of training strategies. In particular, hierarchical architecture requires the agent to learn how to coordinate basic learned responses. We show that the best results are achieved when both the agent's architecture and the training strategy match the structure of the behavior pattern to be learned. We report the results of a number of experiments carried out both in simulated and in real environments, and show that the results of simulations carry smoothly to real robots. While most of our experiments deal with simple reactive behavior, in one of them we demonstrate the use of a simple and general memory mechanism. As a whole, our experimental activity demonstrates that classifier systems with genetic algorithms can be practically employed to develop autonomous agents. _______________________________ * This work has been submitted to the Artificial Intelligence Journal and has been partly supported by the Italian National Research Council, under the "Progetto Finalizzato Sistemi Informatici e Calcolo Parallelo", subproject 2 "Processori dedicati", and under the "Progetto Finalizzato Robotica", subproject 2 "Tema: ALPI". + Progetto di Intelligenza Artificiale e Robotica, Dipartimento di Elettronica e Informazione, Politecnico di Milano, Piazza Leonardo da Vinci, 32, 20133 Milano, Italy (e-mail: [email protected]). # International Computer Science Institute, Berkeley, CA 94704, and Progetto di Intelligenza Artificiale e Robotica, Dipartimento di Elettronica e Informazione, Politecnico di Milano, Piazza Leonardo da Vinci, 32, 20133 Milano, Italy (e-mail: [email protected]).

Bayesian interaction shaping: learning to influence strategic interactions in mixed robotic domains

Despite recent advances in getting autonomous robots to follow instructions from humans, strategically intelligent robot behaviours have received less attention. Strategic intelligence entails influence over the beliefs of other interacting agents, possibly adversarial. In this paper, we present a learning framework for strategic interaction shaping in physical robotic systems, where an autonom...

Ubiquitous Realities through Situated Social Agents

In order to take the developing field of Social Robotics a stage further, this work investigates mixed reality in embodied social agents. The Virtual Robotic Workbench is employed which provides a versatile framework for experimentation in interoperability and cooperation between heterogeneous robots (real, simulated and virtual) and humans in multi-reality domains. Explicit social interaction,...

Evolving Robot Vision: Increasing Performance through Shaping

Automated methods for designing robot controllers based on machine-learning techniques have shown great promise when applied to simple robot tasks, but in order to ‘scale up’ to more complicated problems they will require assistance from human experts, a process that is often called ‘robot shaping’. In this paper, the difficult problem of learning how to visually track moving objects is examine...

Task Learning through Visual Demonstration and Situated Dialogue

To enable effective collaborations between humans and cognitive robots, it is important for robots to continuously acquire task knowledge from human partners. To address this issue, we are currently developing a framework that supports task learning through visual demonstration and natural language dialogue. One core component of this framework is the integration of language and vision that is ...
